Year in jail for primary school teacher over sex offences

A PALMERSTON primary school teacher will spend the next year behind bars and will be a registered sex offender until 2033.
The teacher, who cannot be named, shook his head and rocked back and forth slightly in his chair as Justice Graham Hiley sentenced him to three years and four months jail, suspended after 12 months served.
The teacher was found guilty earlier this month of five counts of indecent dealing, relating to two students, and one count of aggravated assault.
The charges relate to two students, and took place in 2013 and 2016 respectively.
Among the offences, the teacher pulled at a 12-year-old girls shorts and underwear and said words to the effect of “just looking”.
He repeatedly kissed another girl on the lips and once lifted her shirt, played with her belly button and described it as “so cute”.
Justice Hiley found the teacher’s offending took place during recess breaks, in his classroom, where he locked the door and turned the lights off to avoid being seen.
The teacher was supported in court and in character references by a number of colleagues, who remain at the school.
In a victim impact statement, one of the girls said she hasn’t felt the same about herself since the offending occurred, and that she had an emotional breakdown.
Justice Hiley said: “As their teacher you were in a position of trust and control over these children.”
The court heard the teacher had previously served a short stint on remand in a 2m wide, 4m long cell with no natural light, isolated from other prisoners for his own safety.

For 4 years I tried to get govt departments to listen to me I was 34years old at time and could not understand why they werent investigating what went on there for years. Not just with bcd but other staff there also. I now know..conflict of interest with the many I informed. So much to write will do so again soon. That situation existed because Rob Presswell helped it to exist. He protected his friend BCD when parents and kids complained. Hylton Hayes protected Rob Presswell and BCD. Solicitors for the NT protected Rob Presswell to protect his friend BCD. Eva Lawler protected her friend Rob Presswell to protect his friend BCD.
NOBODY PROTECTED THOSE KIDS AND THEIR FAMILIES FROM HARM.
Despite statements from employees who witnessed the incident, Andrew, Roberts, Guppy, McDowell, Webber, Davies, Chandler, Giles, Gunner, Lawler, Baylis, Burke and Knights all protected Parker and failed the little boy who Parker threatened with his cattle prodder to leave the school grounds and go home on his own.
Q. Why did the dept of education promote this person to a bigger town school and not terminate his employment?
A. Because he lied to the investigators and his managers protected him to avoid liability.
An article on the Crikey website highlights this sort of administrative action as being small ‘c’ corruption, and that this type of administrative behaviour is endemic in the Northern Territory bureaucracy.
